Master our featured game: Gin Rummy Classic!
The Objective
In Gin Rummy, you aim to organize your hand of 10 cards into melds. A meld can be a Group (3 or 4 cards of the same rank, e.g., 8-8-8) or a Run (3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g., 4-5-6 of Clubs).
Understanding Deadwood
Cards that are not part of any valid meld are called deadwood. Each deadwood card has a point value (Aces are 1, face cards are 10, others are face value). When your deadwood points count is 10 or less, you can choose to "Knock" and end the game round!
How to Go "Gin"
If you form valid melds using all 10 cards in your hand, leaving you with zero deadwood, you can declare "Gin"! This awards you a bonus of 25 points plus your opponent's total deadwood count.
Useful Tips
- Avoid holding onto high-value cards like Kings or Queens unless you are close to completing a set. They inflate your deadwood quickly!
- Pay close attention to what your opponent draws from the discard pile. It reveals the sets they are attempting to build.
- Knock early in the round to surprise your opponent before they organize their hand.
